CCI Lenovo ThinkStation E30

The CCI Lenovo ThinkStation E30 7783-UN6 & 7783-UN7 machine has no problem running TarHeel Linux 6.

It is recommended to install TarHeel Linux 6.4.  During installation, choose to install NVIDIA driver and CUDA to take full advantage of the NVIDIA card in the machine.

There is a problem in installing TarHeel Linux 6.2 with machines equipped with Nvidia video card such as Lenovo ThinkStation E30.  Video driver, Nouveau, which comes with the installer is having problem.  The installer presents a kernal panic error and quits.

You see an error such as the following.

Kernel panic - not syncing: Fatal exception

To disable Nouveau driver, hit tab when you see the boot menus, then append the following to the end of the line.

rdblacklist=nouveau nomodeset

We have tested it on a CCI E30 machine (thanks to Laurie Betts in Chemistry Department) and it works.

Lenovo ThinkStation E30 runs fine with TarHeel Linux 6 with Nouveau disable.  It is recommended to install the NVIDIA Linux driver instead.  Follow the instruction “Installing NVDIA Drivers in TarHeel Linux 6” to install the driver.

This machine has no problem with TarHeel Linux 5 installation.  It is also recommended to install the NVIDIA Linux driver.
